The whole coaching crew is outstanding, and they are truly dedicated to enhancing their students. Moreover, the teaching methodology based on principles will equip you with a profound grasp of jiu-jitsu concepts that will benefit you in the long run.

I had the pleasure of attending a seminar with Matt Thornton at SBG East Coast. He was so friendly, polite, humble, and just a world-class expert! It's not often you find all those qualities in one person.
Harper Harris (6/11/25, 2:36 PM):
I can't express my admiration enough for this place. The coaching team is extremely attentive, and the sense of camaraderie is truly authentic. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Larry Moore (6/7/25, 7:21 PM):
I've been training at Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness in Wareham for over a year now, and I absolutely adore it! Initially, I joined for self-defense purposes, but I swiftly developed a passion for both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The ambiance at Nexus is simply fantastic; everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you're seeking a gym with a positive vibe and a community of like-minded individuals, then I highly recommend giving Nexus a shot. The coaches are all incredibly supportive, and if you have any inquiries, they will take the time to explain things until you grasp them. You don't need to worry about feeling overwhelmed if you're just starting out, as they offer a variety of classes. So, if you're interested in either Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I wholeheartedly encourage you to visit Nexus Martial Arts and Fitness and give it a go!
Virginia Sanders (6/6/25, 10:47 PM):
I've only been practicing BJJ for around a year and a half, but during that time I've discovered a second home at SBG East Coast. The atmosphere and students are incredibly welcoming, and the coaching staff is top-notch. This school not only instructs you in essential self-defense techniques, but imparts valuable life skills as well, all while providing a fun way to stay fit. The one thing I wish is that I had found BJJ sooner! SBG is truly the place to be, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Russell Perez (6/5/25, 6:18 AM):
My good sir and I were on the lookout for a fresh exercise routine to keep us engaged and in better shape. We were growing weary of trying to spur each other on to go to the gym. When we made the decision to give SBG a whirl, I was a tad hesitant at first – what did I know about martial arts? What I soon discovered upon starting was that there was much for me to learn. As humbling as it may be to realize one's shortcomings, SBG fosters a desire and fortifies one's determination to expand one's knowledge. Coach Stephen Whittier, his instructors, and fellow members are amiable, knowledgeable, and inspiring. I now eagerly anticipate the next Muy Thai or Jiu-Jitsu class and find myself attempting moves at home after returning from class. Eager to return to the mats at the earliest opportunity! Many thanks to SBG!
Justin Coleman (6/5/25, 6:06 AM):
A brilliant spot with top-notch coaches who will really push you to your fullest potential and beyond. Absolutely no doubt in recommending this dojo to others.
Mia Parker (6/1/25, 12:43 AM):
I usually don't write reviews, but I just had to take a moment to share how pleased I am with Stephen Whittier and Straight Blast Gym (SBG) East Coast. So, why SBG? I was seeking something beyond the typical weightlifting and cardio routines. While I didn't have much knowledge about martial arts, it always fascinated me. As I researched local gyms, SBG stood out to me. SBG offered Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, two disciplines that complement each other perfectly for MMA. My only concern was my age - at 51, I wasn't sure if I'd fit in at SBG or if it was the right fit for me. But sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, and I'm so glad I did.
Since joining the gym 5 months ago, I can honestly say I've never felt more welcomed. The instructors and fellow members are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals and make you feel like part of the family. With highly skilled instructors, a top-quality curriculum, I find myself eager to learn more each day. I genuinely look forward to my workouts now and feel more energized. Thank you, Coach Steve and SBG, for everything.
Willie Sullivan (5/30/25, 9:50 PM):
Brilliant staff, top-notch atmosphere. Absolutely chuffed and will be returning for the long haul.
Harper Morales (5/29/25, 6:50 PM):
SBG has completely transformed the quality of life for my family. We started looking into classes for our seven-year-old son to help him build his confidence and manage his anxiety. Over the past year, we have witnessed a remarkable change in him as he has grown into a self-assured child, no longer held back by the limitations of his anxiety. The coaches are exceptional, committed, experienced, and enjoyable. Not only did we discover exactly what we were seeking at SBG, but we also found a supportive community of like-minded individuals who always have each other's backs.
Kenneth Cruz (5/25/25, 8:20 PM):
When you step into your first class, you become part of a close-knit community. I sensed that immediately when I first joined in 2013. The atmosphere at this gym is incredibly warm and the coaches as well as your training partners will go out of their way to ensure you grasp each new technique. Kru Steve, the owner and head coach, sets a great example for both his coaches and students by training alongside them. The coaches here are friendly, well-informed, modest, and have a clear plan to help every student reach their goals. You will feel right at home here, you will receive support here, and you will flourish here. Take a chance on them and you won't ever look back.
Aaron Turner (5/25/25, 12:45 PM):
I began my training at the end of February and I have already learned a lot! I adore the coaches and the entire tribe. They definitely keep me motivated, and I truly enjoy being around everyone. I have found my new family and a place where I love to be.
Zoey Hughes (5/25/25, 4:24 AM):
My experience at SBG East Coast has been absolutely brilliant. I chose SBG for a variety of reasons, one of which was the warm and inclusive atmosphere created by both the staff and fellow members. In addition, they provide training in two different martial arts disciplines, muay thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu, as well as a range of other classes including yoga and a women's boot camp. I was pleasantly surprised to see a significant number of women participating in the martial arts programs, and the support from everyone is truly encouraging. Furthermore, the availability of morning and evening classes makes it convenient for individuals with different work schedules. Each class has pushed me to strive for excellence in my martial arts journey. I wholeheartedly recommend SBG to anyone looking to explore martial arts! :)
Samantha Thomas (5/24/25, 9:41 PM):
Absolutely smashing bunch of folks. Enrolled my daughter and meself a couple months back, and we're chuffed to bits with it. She's gained heaps more confidence and is picking up how to listen and be more respectful. Yours truly has been soaking up the knowledge from some top-notch BJJ and Muay Thai coaches. Coach Steve, Brandon, Elijah, Arthur, and Ryan are just a few of the bloomin' brilliant coaches at SBG. Had a mate sign up since and she's over the moon with it too. Can't wait for many moons of training and camaraderie with these newfound pals. Cheers!
Jeremy Perry (5/24/25, 2:17 PM):
Being a student and having three daughters in the program, I can't speak highly enough about SBG and their coaches! My daughters have progressed so much and their confidence has grown enormously. As a parent, I was keen for my girls to learn self-defense and I couldn't have chosen a better place. The coaches make the classes both enjoyable and challenging. Not only do they teach and train alongside you, but they also set a great example. The environment is like a family where everyone supports your success and is willing to do whatever it takes to assist you. Regardless of your age, fitness level, or athletic ability, they will work with you to help you achieve your goals. I highly recommend that anyone seeking a martial arts school checks out SBG.
Betty Price (5/24/25, 2:12 AM):
My family has been part of SBG for seven years! Blimey, seven years. When you are part of an organization for seven years you see a lot. You get to see how the leaders react to all the things that happen over time. This organization has served as a positive model for digging in and putting in the work.
KIDS PROGRAM. My youngest started when he was three years old. He is now 10. We signed him up because he is a....... VERY ACTIVE BOY. He needed structure and instruction and a way to focus all that energy. We joined SBG and have never turned back. The youth program's attention to each kid and the strengths and challenges each kid faces is phenomenal. Coach Mike knows us and makes a special effort to acknowledge us on a personal level. Coach Branden goes out of his way to make sure each kid is acknowledged. Each coach has taken the time to foster life lessons through the practice of the sport as well as character-building talks, both on the mat and in sideline after-class chats. Each kid is taught to take responsibility for the effort they bring and the consequences of those efforts. My son has developed a sense of himself that is based on a very supportive community. Being accountable to coaches my kids can admire has been a blessing to us in raising a VERY ACTIVE BOY. He takes pride in himself and a lot of that comes from the coaches at SBG.
TEEN/ADULT program: My 15-year-old grew into the Teen/Adult program at SBG and he explains his experience this way "The easiest thing I can think of is that it is 'welcoming.' Like it doesn't matter if you've never met any of the people, they don't look at you strangely, they just start talking to you. There isn't any kind of awkward stage. Brand new people are treated just like the long-time people." My son is often the youngest person on the mat and he is ALWAYS treated with respect and given lessons that honor him as a student. There is this lesson that comes up in classes that really emphasizes the importance of being a good training partner. That each student brings value to the mat and each should be treated respectfully and encouraged to be a part of the process. My son has placed first in several competitions, but he has also lost. And in each loss, he was wholly supported by the coaches to learn from those experiences. He takes part in the special events the gym puts on that expose him to successful fighters and trainers. The lessons he takes away from this exposure inform his value system. Most significantly, the Matt Thornton seminars that expose him to an ideology of life through training. What I like to see is that the leaders of this organization like Coach Steve Whittier and Matt Thornton are well-read intelligent individuals who have a purpose they want to share. Such focus and passion are a great example for my teenager as he grows into an adult.
WOMEN'S FITNESS: I have been taking the Women's Boot Camp class for several years. I work a very stressful job and I commute two hours to work, yes, two hours one way. I was grumpy and tired ALL THE TIME. My husband got me a membership to the Boot Camp for Christmas one year and it has changed my life. I didn't know how I was going to be able to fit in an hour of exercise three times a week after my long day. It didn't take long to get addicted to the changes this class made in my life. Coach James makes it challenging and fun and it is never the same thing twice. I love to show up and be challenged and leave spent and fulfilled. I never would have thought that it was possible to have energy at the end of the day, but now my Boot Camp class is a priority in my life. I am strong and capable and more willing to try new challenges like running and obstacle courses and things I never would have done before this class. The women in the class are a phenomenal asset as well. The group is welcoming and supportive and the dedication we have to the class is unanimous. You'd have to make a strong argument to think I'm going to skip a Boot Camp class, 'cause that just ain't gonna happen ;-)
Elizabeth Phillips (5/23/25, 7:42 PM):
Upon my initial perception, martial arts was akin to what you witness in films and on the telly - tough warriors mastering the art of combat. However, it transcends that notion entirely. SBG East Coast altered my understanding of martial arts for eternity.
When I initially enrolled in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai classes at SBG, I had just completed my studies at university and sought a positive way to fill my time. Little did I comprehend, I was delving into something far deeper. SBG swiftly became a sanctuary for me.
Coming from a turbulent background, training in the gym alongside exceptional coaches and elite practitioners reshaped my view on combat compared to my upbringing. The discipline required, physical conditioning, and connection between mind and body were revelations that improved my practice as I continued my training.
Under the leadership of Coach Steve, SBG East Coast transformed my life and prompted me to reassess my priorities. I share this as a former member with no personal gain. If you feel even the slightest inclination, take the leap. It will undoubtedly be a decision you won’t regret. The impact on your life will exceed your expectations. Thank you, SBG!
Nicole Baker (5/22/25, 9:21 PM):
I've been training at SBG for nearly 2 years now and I absolutely adore it. I've shed 45lbs and feel much more energetic. The level of support and guidance from the coaches is truly remarkable. They understand my objectives and collaborate with me to surpass them. I have complete faith in them. I've also signed up my 8-year-old son for their youth martial arts program. He's completely hooked on it. It's a fantastic place with amazing vibes!
