I first crossed paths with Jeff Nailen around a year back during one of his training sessions at Ft. Marcy. Upon mentioning my contemplation of enlisting the services of a personal trainer, Jeff directed me to peruse his website for an exhaustive delineation of his health training and physical fitness approach. Upon initial scrutiny of the site, I was initially taken aback as it appeared that his regimen primarily centered around weight loss. Given my slender physique standing tall at 6’2” and never tipping the scales beyond 185 pounds, I was almost dissuaded from reaching out. I candidly expressed to Jeff that my objectives veered towards strength training, enhancing flexibility, and revelling in heightened energy levels rather than shedding weight.

Unfazed, Jeff asserted that all these aspirations aligned seamlessly with the overarching weight loss and health programs he offered. He urged me to undergo a metabolic evaluation and other assessments to ascertain the most conducive dietary plan to realize my goals. Despite my skepticism, I proceeded with the metabolic survey, following which Jeff curated a highly personalized diet accompanied by biweekly training sessions aimed at attaining my bespoke objectives.

Now, about those 185 pounds: I’ll confess that any excess fat on my frame seemed to congregate around my midsection akin to an inner tube. We kickstarted the journey by taking body measurements as a benchmark for tracking any progress I might achieve. In a span of six weeks, I managed to shed over 15 pounds (all from the midsection) and commenced witnessing tangible enhancements in my strength and flexibility. My waistline dwindled from 36 inches to 32 (and is en route to 31!).

As if that wasn’t motivating enough, his tailored diet regimen instigated a significant improvement in my digestive well-being, enabling me to bid adieu to the trusty little purple pills (initially Prilosec, then Nexium) that assorted physicians had prescribed over the past 25 years to combat acid reflux. I bid farewell to Nexium four weeks post embarking on his diet, passing on the balance of my pills to a comrade (who incidentally wasn’t under Jeff’s tutelage!), and have now traversed an entire year sans the need or consumption of any such medication. Jeff poses a palpable threat to the prescription pharmaceutical sphere!

Presently, Jeff and I convene twice weekly for training sessions. At 77, my general physical well-being has never been more robust. And here’s the unsung boon of collaborating with Jeff: he exudes a consistently amiable demeanor and exhibits thoughtful consideration towards his clients, honing in with laser precision to ensure all exercises are executed accurately for optimal efficacy while infusing the sessions with an element of amusement that belies the actual exertion. Such focused attention cannot be contrived—it emanates from the trainer’s intrinsic character, a quality Jeff possesses in abundance.

My definitive advice to anyone grappling with the cacophony of internet, television, and advertising bombardment expounding varied weight control methodologies boils down to this: For those earnestly intent on assuming command of their weight, health, and future, merely retain two words in mind: Jeff Nailen. Take my word for it, the Santa Fe Way works wonders – but don’t even contemplate encroaching on my training slots!
