My wee lad of 6 and meself have just started at Jiu Jitsu Performance Academy, and we're absolutely chuffed with it. The coaches and fellow students have been top-notch, always giving us a hand when needed. We're both keen on sticking with it and continuing our learning journey there as much as we can. Cheers!

I've been training at this martial arts school for 2 weeks now, and I must say, the instruction, facility, and community are absolutely fantastic. As a newcomer to BJJ, I couldn't have asked for a more welcoming and friendly environment. Every day, I eagerly anticipate the new challenges and opportunities for learning.
Donald Brown (7/8/25, 4:18 AM):
Great academy with an amazing atmosphere. It's clear that Sean is truly passionate, not just about the sport, but also about fostering it in the correct way. I entered with no martial arts background and felt at ease right away. The classes consistently emphasize fundamentals but also offer plenty of chances for live sparring. Even the experienced students are welcoming and willing to help newcomers. I highly recommend it for anyone (male, female, or child) interested in BJJ.
Amy Graham (7/8/25, 3:37 AM):
The Jiu Jitsu Performance Academy is absolutely top-notch! Sean and the rest of the coaches are extremely professional and excel at keeping me updated on my son's progress in his classes. My son looks forward to going to class every day and is beaming with pride over his newfound skills. I am delighted that I chose this Academy to mentor my son.
Carol Bailey (7/6/25, 11:16 AM):
From the moment you step through the doors, Sean and the rest of the coaches at the Martial Arts School make you feel like part of the family.
Noah Murphy (7/6/25, 4:02 AM):
My lad has been training at this Martial Arts school since this past December; he embarked on this journey at a tough time with his ADHD. When I first mentioned this to Sean, he shared a relatable personal tale. After delving into his blog, I was certain this was the perfect spot for my boy. I didn't bother looking elsewhere. My initial impression was that this venue is unlike any other martial arts dojo I've encountered. It felt pristine! The youngsters aren't idling around waiting for their turn. There are no older kids instructing the younger ones. All of the instructors are mature, skilled individuals with empathy, involvement, and discipline. Over the past 8 months, I've witnessed my son develop muscles, confidence, and tenacity. Sean and his team of mentors are dedicated to the personal growth of each child, going beyond the physical abilities and challenges of jiu-jitsu.
I now realize there are countless jiu-jitsu schools between JJPA and our residence, but I won't consider them further because my son has found his haven. Upon joining JJPA, you become part of the family.

I am currently enrolled in the adult program at Spangler's Martial Arts. I have trained in different martial arts styles at various schools, and I can confidently say that Spangler's has the most inviting atmosphere. Unlike other places that focus on ego, here everyone is genuinely interested in improving together. One of the things I appreciate most is the school's philosophy of greeting everyone as you step onto the mat. This simple gesture makes new students feel incredibly welcome. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on prioritizing the health and safety of all members.
Judith Cook (7/2/25, 6:54 AM):
This here is my first and only bjj gym, I must say. The folks are just fantastic, real helpful and respectful. Coach Sean, now he's a real gem, full of knowledge and always ready to help out folks at any skill level.
Kimberly Powell (6/29/25, 11:33 AM):
Sean 's an amazing instructor. Everyone there is so welcoming and kind. There's no ego or intimidation, making it a great place for people of all ages. I highly recommend it!
Randy Phillips (6/25/25, 4:19 AM):
Coach Sean is absolutely brilliant! He truly dedicates himself to helping all the children learn and pushes them to reach their fullest potential.
My 6-year-old has been attending this academy for half a year now and he absolutely adores it. I am eagerly looking forward to the day when my 2-year-old is old enough to join in the fun as well! 😂
Russell Bailey (6/24/25, 12:30 AM):
Both of our lads have been attending Sprangler since October 2018. Our experience has been absolutely brilliant. We were on the lookout for something that wasn't just another belt factory, with an instructor who could instill the values of respect and discipline that martial arts embody. Professor Sean strikes the perfect balance between firm and enjoyable. I fully support my child dropping and doing push-ups if they're not paying attention or messing around. It's important to me that they are challenged in that way because I know they are capable of rising to it. Both of our boys attend three classes a week and eagerly anticipate each session. This establishment is run by a dynamic husband and wife team, and Kelly (Professor Sean's wife) is fantastic. She immediately puts you at ease and relates wonderfully with all the kids. I cannot recommend them highly enough! Cheers!
Ella Kelly (6/22/25, 12:38 PM):
Absolutely top-notch martial arts school! The training schedule is fantastic, with early morning sessions available. Coach Spangler really knows his stuff and is a truly respectful instructor who imparts some incredible techniques. If you're in the area, you absolutely must visit this place. I'd give it ten stars if I could!
Richard Fisher (6/20/25, 9:28 AM):
What I cherish most, aside from the top-notch training, is the warm and welcoming atmosphere that greets me each and every day. It's truly heartwarming how everyone here is eager to share their insights about bjj. This place exudes a friendly and inclusive vibe that makes it a truly special and loving environment for martial arts enthusiasts.
Nathan Peterson (6/20/25, 7:25 AM):
After ten years of training, I was worried that I might never discover my real BJJ haven. But everything changed about two years back when I stepped into Spangler Martial Arts. Professor Spangler embodies everything I was looking for in a BJJ coach. He's a firm leader who doesn't tolerate any nonsense in his academy. Notably, he's also incredibly supportive and dedicated to ensuring every student succeeds. The vibe is warm and inviting, with numerous advanced students happy to lend their time, advice, and skills.
Grace Taylor (6/19/25, 1:38 PM):
I absolutely adore this martial arts academy, absolutely adore Coach Sean, absolutely adore my training partners, and bloody hell do I have a passion for jiu jitsu! I feel incredibly fortunate to have stumbled upon this gem around a year back, and you might just find yourself lucky enough to discover it as well 😁
Nicholas Williams (6/19/25, 12:56 PM):
A few weeks back, I entered this Martial Arts School as a newbie white belt with zero training experience. The warmth of welcome I received was unmatched, and since then, my progress has been remarkable. The team here is top-notch, and the quality of training is exceptional. Sean, our instructor, is simply outstanding and shows unwavering dedication to his students. Every person I've encountered so far has been incredibly friendly. If you're seeking a secure and enjoyable setting, this is the place to be. Give it a go!
Noah Bennett (6/18/25, 4:38 AM):
Professor Sean delivers a warm, informative, dynamic, and fun-filled program for both children and adults. My 5 and 7-year-old have had a fantastic time learning BJJ and forming friendships. I appreciate the high level of activity in the class and the fact that they concentrate on a specific technique for multiple lessons to ensure the kids grasp it. They dedicate at least half of the class to partner sparring, which is excellent for reinforcing the learned moves or positions and for expending their energy.
Peter Morris (6/16/25, 7:18 PM):
Professor Spangler recently visited our dojo to lead a seminar on martial arts techniques. His patience and ability to connect with each student was truly impressive. It was a fantastic evening filled with learning and camaraderie. Although I haven't had the opportunity to visit his own school, I highly recommend him based on his teaching style and demeanor. I just had to jump on here and share my experience!
Christopher Kim (6/14/25, 12:04 AM):
I was recommended to start training Jiu Jitsu with Spangler by a mate and I couldn't have asked for a better coach. After nearly a year of training, I've gone from getting schooled like a newbie in white belt competitions to dominating intermediate no-gi matches with heel hooks, guillotines, armbars, and chokes.
Apart from the top-notch instruction, there's a real sense of camaraderie among all the students, and Spangler really listens to our needs by adjusting class times to suit our schedules.
I'll d'arce choke anyone who dares to say Spangler isn't the top dog in the area.
Karen Peterson (6/13/25, 6:51 AM):
I've been training with Sean at Spangler BJJ for a while now and I must say, it's been an absolute pleasure. This martial arts school offers a welcoming atmosphere with a strong focus on technique, all while providing a supportive and challenging environment that isn't overwhelming. The regular training sessions emphasize the importance of mastering small details in effective techniques, which can truly make a difference in combat sports or self-defense scenarios. While there is encouragement to participate in competitions to track progress and identify areas for improvement, it's not a mandatory aspect.
Sean serves as a fantastic role model for all of us - adults and kids alike - at the school. Personally, I admire him as a mentor in my martial arts journey and as a representation of how I aspire to evolve both in my martial arts practice and in leading a healthy, family-oriented lifestyle. In conclusion, finding a better martial arts school in North Carolina would certainly be a challenge.
