Gleason Family YMCA: A Community Gem in Wareham, Massachusetts

The Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham, Massachusetts, serves as a vital community resource, providing various programs and facilities for families and individuals alike. However, the experience of members can vary significantly, highlighting both strengths and areas needing improvement.

Accessibility Features

One of the commendable features of the Gleason Family YMCA is its wheelchair-accessible car park and wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring ease of access for all members of the community. This commitment to accessibility is crucial for fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can participate in activities and programs.

Feedback from Members

While the YMCA offers many amenities, feedback from members reveals a mixed bag of experiences. Some users appreciate the clean environment and friendly staff, mentioning that the gym is always well-maintained. One member stated, "It is always very clean when I go to the gym and shoot basketballs in the court." However, others have raised concerns about various aspects of the facility. Comments indicate dissatisfaction with outdated equipment, exemplified by one member's experience with rusty gym machinery. Additionally, there have been complaints regarding the handling of membership cancellations, with one individual sharing that they faced difficulty in disconnecting their membership even after moving away.

Family-Friendly Environment

Families visiting the Gleason YMCA have noted the importance of proper staffing in daycare facilities and swimming lessons. One parent expressed appreciation for the swim instruction available for toddlers but highlighted the need for improved information for first-time users about the locker room policies concerning young children. A particular experience shared involved a parent being escorted out of the women's locker room with her half-undressed baby due to misunderstandings about changing facilities. This incident underscores the necessity for clearer communication regarding facilities designed for families, particularly concerning family locker rooms.

Concerns About Staff Conduct

A recurring theme in member feedback relates to staff interactions. While some describe staff as friendly and helpful, others have expressed frustration over unprofessional behavior. For example, one member recounted a negative encounter with a staff member who responded rudely to a simple inquiry regarding pool procedures. Additionally, issues were raised concerning inconsistent rules applied by staff, especially in the pool area, which some found excessively strict. Despite having supportive instructors like Lena, who encourages participation and wellness, the behavior of certain staff members can detract from the overall experience.

Conclusion

Overall, the Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham is a facility filled with potential and valuable community resources. Its emphasis on accessibility through features like a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance is commendable. Nevertheless, addressing the concerns raised by members—especially regarding equipment quality, staff professionalism, and clear communication on policies—could enhance the experience for all who utilize this community hub. By continuing to evolve based on feedback, the Gleason Family YMCA can remain a beloved facility for years to come.

We absolutely adored the swim class at this facility. It's a shame that the water temperature is a bit CHILLY! Brrr 🥶 ...

Do yourself a favor and avoid joining this organization. They will go to great lengths to make it difficult for you to cancel your membership and will keep charging you every month. I relocated to a different area and was consistently informed that the only way to cancel my membership was in person, until just recently after nearly two years of ongoing charges. There are superior facilities in the vicinity at more affordable rates and with much better member support. Save yourself the hassle and steer clear of signing up for a membership here.

Friendly, fast, and very organized.
Angela Henderson (4/27/25, 7:32 PM):
Lovely experience, wonderful memories from my childhood, and plenty of enjoyable activities for all ages!
Russell Ortiz (4/26/25, 12:00 PM):
Tidy, socially distanced, and secure!
Denise Jenkins (4/26/25, 2:49 AM):
We enrolled in group training sessions with coach Lou, 30 minutes each, thrice a week (MWF). The initial workout can be tough if you've been out of the game for a while, but they become more manageable as you build strength. The group comprises individuals with varying abilities, ensuring you always have someone at a similar level. Additionally, Lou exudes positivity and keeps the routines varied, preventing any chance of boredom. Highly recommended!
Jennifer Sanders (4/24/25, 2:37 AM):
Absolutely adored this establishment! By far the finest YMCA I've had the pleasure of visiting.
Nicole Cruz (4/22/25, 10:02 AM):
Mel is the worst employee with the biggest attitude. I politely asked a question only to receive a sarcastic response and a rude glare. No employee has the right to speak to someone in that manner! Very disappointed.
Linda Hernandez (4/22/25, 2:07 AM):
As per usual, this is a fantastic spot for any exercise, swimming, or gym session. The staff are always incredibly helpful and friendly, making each visit a delightful experience. I make an effort to work out every day, and I always feel so much better afterward!

I absolutely adore this establishment. It is immaculate and quite spacious. I am definitely planning on renewing my membership. The only small issue I encountered was related to the open lane swim session in the mornings. Instead of actively swimming, some individuals seemed to be more interested in socializing and taking up space in the lanes. If you are in the pool, it is important to prioritize swimming over chatting with friends in nearby lanes. On one occasion, I found myself waiting for 30 minutes while two women engaged in conversation in the pool, which was a bit frustrating.
Jordan Gutierrez (4/12/25, 7:09 PM):
Welcoming team. Well-maintained gear. All items regularly checked and serviced.
Layla Reyes (4/8/25, 12:35 PM):
I got my first and second doses of the COVID vaccine there.
Abigail Kim (4/5/25, 1:05 PM):
1. The lobby at this YMCA is quite welcoming.
2. The gym is consistently kept clean, allowing me to enjoy shooting hoops on the court.
3. Can you believe they have a full-blown water slide in the swimming pool area?
Kathleen Powell (4/4/25, 10:38 PM):
The gym equipment is terribly ancient and covered in rust. I dared to plant myself on a seat that was in dire need of tweaking... it hardly budged, and when it finally did, I gently lowered myself onto it only for the seat to collapse beneath me just 10 seconds later - and I must add that I am currently 5 months along in my pregnancy. Furthermore, the childcare facilities require more adequately staffed personnel. It hardly seems appropriate to have just two elderly ladies overseeing a multitude of babies and toddlers.
Rose Stewart (4/4/25, 11:15 AM):
Absolutely adore my local YMCA and the Sunday class with Lena is just splendid!
