Gleason Family YMCA: A Community Gem in Wareham, Massachusetts

The Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham, Massachusetts, serves as a vital community resource, providing various programs and facilities for families and individuals alike. However, the experience of members can vary significantly, highlighting both strengths and areas needing improvement.

Accessibility Features

One of the commendable features of the Gleason Family YMCA is its wheelchair-accessible car park and wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring ease of access for all members of the community. This commitment to accessibility is crucial for fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can participate in activities and programs.

Feedback from Members

While the YMCA offers many amenities, feedback from members reveals a mixed bag of experiences. Some users appreciate the clean environment and friendly staff, mentioning that the gym is always well-maintained. One member stated, "It is always very clean when I go to the gym and shoot basketballs in the court." However, others have raised concerns about various aspects of the facility. Comments indicate dissatisfaction with outdated equipment, exemplified by one member's experience with rusty gym machinery. Additionally, there have been complaints regarding the handling of membership cancellations, with one individual sharing that they faced difficulty in disconnecting their membership even after moving away.

Family-Friendly Environment

Families visiting the Gleason YMCA have noted the importance of proper staffing in daycare facilities and swimming lessons. One parent expressed appreciation for the swim instruction available for toddlers but highlighted the need for improved information for first-time users about the locker room policies concerning young children. A particular experience shared involved a parent being escorted out of the women's locker room with her half-undressed baby due to misunderstandings about changing facilities. This incident underscores the necessity for clearer communication regarding facilities designed for families, particularly concerning family locker rooms.

Concerns About Staff Conduct

A recurring theme in member feedback relates to staff interactions. While some describe staff as friendly and helpful, others have expressed frustration over unprofessional behavior. For example, one member recounted a negative encounter with a staff member who responded rudely to a simple inquiry regarding pool procedures. Additionally, issues were raised concerning inconsistent rules applied by staff, especially in the pool area, which some found excessively strict. Despite having supportive instructors like Lena, who encourages participation and wellness, the behavior of certain staff members can detract from the overall experience.

Conclusion

Overall, the Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham is a facility filled with potential and valuable community resources. Its emphasis on accessibility through features like a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance is commendable. Nevertheless, addressing the concerns raised by members—especially regarding equipment quality, staff professionalism, and clear communication on policies—could enhance the experience for all who utilize this community hub. By continuing to evolve based on feedback, the Gleason Family YMCA can remain a beloved facility for years to come.

Excellent for the entire family. Outstanding gym with an Olympic-size pool. Abundance of activities available. Impeccably maintained facilities. Convenient parking. Family-friendly environment. Childcare services offered. Relaxing massage center on-site. You will not be let down.

A single star is far too generous a rating. I must express my profound disappointment in the manner in which Debbie Fringuelli, the senior executive director at Wareham YMCA, addressed the issue of compensating me for the charges I've incurred over the past year and a half without prior notification due to the pandemic. When I confronted her about this matter, her response was, "You sound like a two-year-old." Your appreciation for the year and a half of donations is duly noted.

I've been a member of around 5-6 different YMCAs in the Greater Boston area, and I have to say that this YMCA is truly exceptional.
Amy Martin (6/9/25, 10:32 PM):
The facility is brilliant and the pool staff is simply fantastic.
Ralph Torres (6/6/25, 8:13 PM):
Lovely outdoor walking trail, innit?

I phoned to inquire about swim lessons for my 4-year-old child with ASD. I was informed that I would need to arrange private lessons for children like mine. When I questioned what was meant by "children like them," I was told it referred to those with challenges. I ended the call in tears. The elderly lady who answered the phone should consider educating herself on these children before labeling them as problematic.
Sara Price (6/3/25, 10:35 PM):
Top-notch team; unparalleled in their personal and professional expertise.
Juan Bennett (6/3/25, 5:20 PM):
It's a FANTASTIC SPOT WITH FANTASTIC FOLKS.
Elizabeth Flores (5/31/25, 11:31 PM):
The experience was brilliant until I went into the men's shower area... I had just finished cleaning myself up when a man approached me, stuck his head in, and remarked, "Hey mate, have you got any of that spray?" I responded, "No," and as I turned around, I noticed him sneakily trying to look at my private parts (I'm 14) which were covered by a towel. I swiftly concluded my shower, put on my shorts, and then spotted him parading around in the nude once more... But this isn't the YMCA's fault, it's the individual's fault.

The swim lessons for babies aged two and under are excellent for socializing. The only downside is the lack of information provided to first-time users about the locker room policies.

As a new mom, it was my first time visiting the Gleason YMCA with my baby, and I was unaware that baby boys under two are not permitted in the women's locker room. In the past, babies would accompany their mothers into the locker room.

I later learned that there are now Family Locker Rooms available. One for women with male children or babies, and another for men with female children or babies. If I had known about this beforehand, I would have used the appropriate locker room.

However, I was not aware of this policy and was physically guided out of the Women's Locker Room with my partially dressed baby and taken to the Women's Family Locker Room by a YMCA staff member.

Upon entering the Women's Family Locker Room, I was surprised by what was happening and was informed that a concerned patron had reported an unauthorized male child in the Women's Locker Room.

It was quite an experience to walk down the hall with my half-naked baby to the correct locker room, accompanied by a Gleason YMCA staff member.
Ella Kelly (5/31/25, 1:09 PM):
The staff and facilities are incredibly user-friendly.
Allison Cruz (5/30/25, 5:55 PM):
A fantastic facility for the entire family. The children adore the swimming lessons.
Jordan Patterson (5/28/25, 12:43 PM):
Fantastic gym with excellent upkeep and staff members. I visit twice a week and you won't find a better deal for your money.
Jeffrey Ramos (5/27/25, 10:07 PM):
My little ones 'ave been comin' 'ere for swim lessons for years. They absolutely adore it!
Ralph Foster (5/26/25, 12:04 AM):
Just came back from the free swim session. The facility itself, with its indoor pool, is quite impressive. However, it seemed like the staff had this notion that kids should stay still in one spot in the water. It felt like they were constantly reprimanding every child in there. Their focus on safety seemed a bit excessive to me. I witnessed a staff member scolding a 2-year-old girl three times in a row for walking too fast, and then proceeded to argue with her father about what he considered "running". My husband even remarked, "Alright buddy, they understood the first four times you said it." It felt like they were sucking the joy out of the place with their overzealous behavior.
Donald Harris (5/24/25, 8:11 AM):
The swim classes are quite pricey for non-members. $96 for 3 lessons is steep! Each lesson only lasts 30 minutes and with 3 other kids in the class, your child might only get 7.5 minutes of actual instruction... costing you $33. That's a total of 22.5 minutes for $96. If you try to voice your concerns about the quality, they don't even bother returning your calls. And to top it off, we had a substitute teacher for our first class, so we wasted a good amount of time waiting for her to catch up on the lessons.
Raymond Sanders (5/23/25, 7:50 PM):
Lovely vibe around here, mate!
Gloria Howard (5/22/25, 8:08 PM):
What a lovely family-friendly spot...and top-notch swimming lessons. My lad has been diving in there for 8 years and absolutely adores it. 💙🌊 He's also been shooting hoops in their basketball league for 2 years. ...
Cheryl Evans (5/21/25, 8:04 PM):
I took my daughter to the rock wall last Friday and the employee didn't show up for work without any notice, and her manager was on vacation....
