The Alaska Club South: A Comprehensive Overview

The Alaska Club South, located in Anchorage, Alaska, offers a variety of amenities and services for fitness enthusiasts and families alike. The facilities have something for everyone, from fitness equipment to a swimming pool, and even child care services.

On-Site Services and Amenities

The club boasts excellent on-site services, including modern exercise equipment, group classes, and personal training options. Members can enjoy the amenities that contribute to a well-rounded fitness experience, such as: - Swimming Pool: A central feature where members can engage in aquatic activities, although some users have noted issues with cleanliness and accessibility during certain hours. - Sauna: A relaxing facility for post-workout recovery. - Basketball Court: Providing opportunities for sport and recreational play.

Outdoor Services and Atmosphere

The Alaska Club South also promotes an inviting atmosphere that encourages community involvement. Outdoor services include an "Open Air" fitness area, which has been praised by members looking to take advantage of the Alaskan sunshine during their workouts.

Child Care & Accessibility

For families, the club provides child care services that allow parents to work out while their kids are engaged in supervised fun. However, past reviews indicate a need for improvement in the supervision and cleanliness of these areas. The facility is equipped with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and wheelchair-accessible car park, making it easier for all members to access the gym.

Service Options and Planning

Members should be aware that a membership is required to utilize the facilities. The planning of activities, especially events like birthday parties, often leads to service disruptions, as several reviews stated that scheduling conflicts arise due to high attendance.

Facility Cleanliness and Maintenance Issues

Feedback regarding the cleanliness of locker rooms and showers has raised concerns. Many users reported dirty facilities and inconsistent maintenance, particularly in high-traffic areas. Complaints about flooding, unclean showers, and dirty lockers have been common themes among various member reviews.

Online Classes and Member Experiences

While many members appreciate the availability of online classes, there are mixed opinions regarding overall staff performance and customer service. Positive experiences with instructors contrast starkly with reports of rudeness from front desk personnel.

Conclusion

The Alaska Club South has great potential as a health and fitness center, yet serious improvements are needed in cleanliness and customer service to enhance member satisfaction. With its diverse offerings and community focus, it remains a significant option for those looking to engage in fitness activities in Anchorage.

I have been a member for 25 years now. The South Club is conveniently located near my residence, which is fantastic. However, I believe there is room for improvement in terms of the club's management and services for its members. For instance, there should be better measures in place to address issues such as providing ice melt or grit for icy surfaces in the parking lot. It is also important to ensure that there are no unauthorized cameras in the men's locker room, clear signage for prohibited activities, and restricting under 21-year-olds from certain adult areas. Moreover, I feel that the cleaning standards could be elevated to meet higher expectations.

This gym is way too expensive for what you get! The pool hours are very limited and not great for young kids. The equipment is always broken, and the showers back up and flood. I wish we were closer to the Eagle River gym - that place is fantastic. The South location is not worth it, even at half the price. You can definitely find better value elsewhere.

The Alaska Club is absolute rubbish. They overcharge like crazy because there ain't no other gyms up here in Alaska, so they figure they can get away with those ridiculous prices. Their sales team is a joke, all they wanna do is lock you into some fancy-schmancy expensive membership, and good luck trying to get out of that contract without shelling out a huge wad of cash. Save yourself the trouble and steer clear of The Alaska Club, mate.
Bryan Flores (6/5/25, 5:44 AM):
I reckon that the Alaska clubs are all right, but it'd be grand if they put a bit more elbow grease into sprucing up the Wasilla gym to match this one. Just my two cents!
Brittany Young (6/4/25, 10:12 AM):
I absolutely adore the gym - top-notch classes, instructors, and services (an absolute steal for a fabulous massage!). Yet, alas, the customer service leaves much to be desired. It is simply exasperating and chaotic attempting to reach out for assistance - even simple tasks like updating my email address or locating someone to help while physically at the gym. I have also taken the initiative to enroll my son in swim lessons, however, on numerous occasions, classes have been unexpectedly cancelled (during one month, over half of the classes were called off!). Furthermore, there was an instance where, after three sessions, they informed me that I had been attending the incorrect class (despite my inquiries to two different staff members regarding its correctness). The instructors are exceptional, but the overall operation of the gym appears quite disordered.

We’ve had a jolly good time at the Alaska Club! My wee ones are absolutely chuffed with their new water playground. It’s tidy, well-staffed, and a breeze to get to.

I’d give it four stars because we had a bit of a kerfuffle about accessing the pool and some membership bits and bobs, haha. But the staff were all top-notch in helping us sort it out. Cheers!
Jean Brown (6/1/25, 6:12 PM):
I absolutely adore being a part of the AK Club! The facilities offered are top-notch! The staff is consistently cordial and hospitable. My children thoroughly enjoy the play areas and swimming pools! The cardiovascular equipment is exceptional and impeccably maintained. I wholeheartedly endorse AK Club as a fantastic, inclusive, family-friendly establishment that my loved ones and I cherish being associated with!
Robert Edwards (5/31/25, 2:52 AM):
The Alaska Club South/Summit is a fantastic establishment. The staff are consistently welcoming, the premises are pristine, and they offer a wide range of workout machines and accessories.

I must say, the personal training services are top-notch! I've worked with a few trainers here, but I am currently under Dayton's guidance. He is an exceptional trainer who customizes the workouts to align with my specific goals and capabilities. A truly warm and amiable individual who evidently possesses the expertise and competencies of a seasoned trainer.
Arthur Hayes (5/26/25, 1:21 AM):
I was completely disappointed with the lack of attention from the front desk staff. My family and I arrived for a children's birthday party and were met with chaos at the entrance. I have a toddler who is currently potty training and needed to use the restroom urgently. When a toddler says they need to go, you only have a short window of time to act! I asked the lady at the front desk if I could take her to the restroom before signing in, but she insisted that everyone had to sign in first. After going through all these unnecessary procedures and waiting for everyone to be signed in, my child had an accident right there.

Not only did we have to sign in every person attending the party, but we were also restricted to using the restroom down the hall in the children's party room. The lack of empathy and urgency from the staff was evident in their expressions. Customer service was truly awful in this situation.
