I absolutely adore this gym. It boasts a wide range of top-notch equipment, and with its extended opening hours, it's perfect for squeezing in a bit of cardio while shooting some hoops.

Just like everyone else 'as said. Proper sneaky with their gym membership and fees. When Covid came about, they gave me two options. Either keep paying and hold tight, or suspend my payments and extend my contract (Can you believe they slyly got me to sign up for a year-long contract under false pretenses that I could cancel anytime, absolute malarkey! And when I called them out on it, they say the sales bloke is no longer with them 🤦🏻‍♂️) by the duration of the payment suspension.

I am leaving this review as I received an email prompting me to do so. Despite some negative experiences in the past, I persevered due to a discouraging encounter with a pseudo instructor who rudely shouted at me through the microphone during class. "Pathetic" were the words Leah K used to address me when I was just starting out and significantly overweight. When I raised my concerns, the response I received was dismissive, with a refusal to engage further on the matter. This unforgettable incident was compounded by the instructor's disrespectful and racist remarks towards me, targeting my culture and nationality. The management failed to address these issues, leading me to discontinue attending her classes. Instead, I turned to online workout resources on platforms like YouTube and Instagram to continue my fitness journey without the negative energy. While the facilities are decent, there are maintenance issues such as lack of cleanliness in the women's bathrooms and delays in repairing broken equipment. As for the classes, I only attend Dana's sessions, as she is truly exceptional. I avoid other classes to steer clear of a repeat of my previous distressing experience. I prefer to focus on my routine quietly without engaging with others. In conclusion, the West club boasts a convenient location.

I have been frequenting the Alaska Club West for over 5 years now, and it has seamlessly woven itself into my daily regimen. The gym exudes a welcoming ambiance and offers ample space to complete your workout routine. Amidst the throes of the pandemic, the Club has diligently upheld a pristine setting, always well-stocked with towels. One aspect that numerous members, including myself, yearn to see enhanced is the extension of operation hours for the Sauna, Steam Room, and Basketball Court. It is our fervent desire to witness these facilities accessible beyond 8 pm once more. Such an alteration would allow working individuals more time post-office hours to relish in these amenities. On a divergent note, I must tip my hat to this gym for boasting the finest water fountain in town!

I didn’t used to mind it, but I’m starting to. I had a chat with the manager today and I’m certain the AK Club account will mention, “we’ve had discussions about this”, but the purpose of a review is to inform everyone else about the poor treatment received.

I’m a pastor and generally a pleasant individual. I’m not one to have outbursts or complain to get my way. I’m quite reasonable in general, so take this as you will.

The Alaska Club WEST has been my gym for 11 years (or more...), but not for much longer. They keep implementing changes that I’m sure benefit their business, but it’s the regular customers who suffer. They moved all the cardio equipment to a poorly ventilated, much smaller area with some fans, hoping to improve air circulation, but if you’re like me and have been a member for over 10 years, you can see how they’ve favored group training opportunities (with 10 people EACH PAYING for what used to be a one-on-one session) and turned what used to be a gym for everyone into a gym for fitness enthusiasts. If you’re a bodybuilder, you’ll fit right in, passing by all the mirrors and muscular individuals ready to welcome you as soon as you walk in. Previously, if you didn't want that environment, you could avoid the bodybuilding section. If you have a normal to larger body type like mine, you may feel inadequate being there. They used to make an effort to assist customers, but now they seem uninterested in people. Just following policies. For over 11 years, you could plan your workout to catch playoff games (in most sports), and if it wasn’t airing, they’d put it on for you. Not anymore. They do NOT switch channels. Never mind that it’s the MLB playoffs. (This was the incident that led to my review, but it’s just the last straw.) They’d rather you watch news on 5 channels and Harry and Ellen. And don’t visit on Sunday nights. At least half the time, there are no clean towels on Sunday nights. The management here changes roughly every three months to a year, so the members often know more about their policies than the management does. Most changes occur with no prior notice, and then they just apologize for the repercussions. I’m just fed up with it. They no longer care for their customers like they used to, and there are numerous more affordable gyms in town where you can receive equal if not better treatment.
Cheryl Russell (5/28/25, 8:34 PM):
The gym equipment and facilities are usually spotless and well-maintained. However, the membership fees are rather high compared to other gyms. One of the highlights of working out at the West location is Maribel, the front desk host. She consistently greets you warmly upon arrival, provides excellent assistance when needed, and bids you farewell with a friendly smile. Maribel's genuine kindness and hospitality truly enhance the gym-going experience!
Kelly Kim (5/28/25, 11:11 AM):
The gear here is top-notch compared to other spots. The staff and cleanliness can be a bit inconsistent, if I'm being honest. But let me tell you, Charles really stands out!
Albert Garcia (5/27/25, 6:39 AM):
Wednesday night group fitness at the Anchorage West location is absolutely fantastic!
Judy Bennett (5/26/25, 3:48 PM):
Austin, from the AK West Club, is an amazing personal trainer. I had the pleasure of working with Austin for several months leading up to a significant surgery. As the surgery date approached and the joint pain and reduced mobility became more pronounced, Austin was incredibly adaptable. Instead of focusing on my limitations, he helped me concentrate on what I could do. I was truly impressed by his willingness to adjust and find creative solutions to maximize my training despite my physical limitations.

Austin is always attentive and prioritizes proper technique. He doesn't waste time scrolling through his phone while you put in the hard work. I am eager to resume my training with Austin as soon as possible. And by the way, thanks to Austin's dedication, I am recovering even better than expected. Thank you, Austin! - T.
