LA Fitness in Silver Spring, Maryland: A Mixed Experience

Located in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland, LA Fitness offers a variety of amenities for fitness enthusiasts. However, this gym has received mixed reviews from its members, revealing areas for improvement alongside its many features.

Atmosphere and Accessibility

The atmosphere at LA Fitness is often described as welcoming thanks to its friendly staff, including notable employees like TJ and Jonathan, who have made a positive impact on many visitors. The gym layout is generally spacious and well-organized, allowing for easy navigation around the equipment.

In terms of accessibility, the facility features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking, making it easier for everyone to utilize its offerings. However, there have been reports about the cleanliness and maintenance of facilities, which may detract from users’ overall experience.

Amenities: What to Expect

Among its various amenities, LA Fitness includes a swimming pool, sauna, and a basketball court. The basketball court is particularly appreciated by users, providing an excellent space for practice and recreation. However, issues have arisen around the sauna, which has been frequently reported as being out of service or less than sanitary.

While there is child care available, reviews indicate that maintenance of both the children’s areas and adult facilities are inconsistent. Issues such as empty soap dispensers, dirty lockers, and malfunctioning showers have been noted by members, indicating a need for enhanced cleaning protocols.

Membership Challenges

Though LA Fitness provides a range of services, several members have expressed frustration over the membership required policies. Many have reported difficulties in canceling their memberships, making it challenging for dissatisfied customers to exit their contracts.

Additionally, the gym has faced critique regarding how the membership process is handled, including instances of unclear communication and pushy sales tactics that prospective members have found off-putting.

Final Thoughts

In summary, while LA Fitness in Silver Spring has the potential to be a strong fitness hub due to its diverse amenities and friendly staff, it struggles with cleanliness and equipment maintenance. Addressing these issues could significantly enhance member satisfaction and make it a top choice in the area. For those considering a membership, it may be worth visiting to gauge if the environment aligns with your fitness needs.

Mary Gonzales (6/15/25, 4:59 PM):
I've been a devoted member of LA Fitness since 2017, but my recent experience on Saturday, 11/30/24, was absolutely dreadful. I brought my ten-year-old nephew along, hoping for a simple visit, only to be met by an operations manager who seemed to lack any sense of customer service or basic human decency.

Upon my arrival, the manager greeted me with little enthusiasm, promptly noting that I didn't have guest privileges on my account and that my nephew was deemed "too young" to enter the facility. When I tried to find a reasonable solution, he completely disregarded me, engaging in lengthy phone calls (15-20 minutes) right in front of me without even bothering to make eye contact. His attitude was condescending and dismissive, showing no interest in resolving the situation.

Despite his disrespectful demeanor, I remained courteous and composed throughout our interaction. Even as he made it clear that he had no respect for me as a paying customer, I kept my cool. When I asked him why he was being disrespectful, he simply said I was "getting on his nerves." Imagine being told that by someone supposed to manage customer relations.

I requested to accompany my nephew to the restroom, to which he bluntly replied "no," without even looking at me. Regardless of LA Fitness's policies, I believe that local laws—especially the D.C. Human Rights Act—should take precedence over company regulations, especially when it involves denying a child access to essential facilities like restrooms.

To worsen the situation, when I asked for the manager's name, he reluctantly stated "Vides Edgar," though his tone and body language indicated otherwise. When I pressed for more information, he snapped back, stating, "I don't work for you," and even threatened to have me escorted out.

Such behavior is completely unacceptable. While enforcing company policies is one thing, treating a loyal member with such disrespect and disregard is another. LA Fitness should feel ashamed of the unprofessional conduct exhibited by this manager and should reconsider their staff training on handling such scenarios.

I am deeply disappointed and intend to escalate this issue further. For those contemplating joining this location, be forewarned: customer loyalty and basic decency seem to hold no value here.

The water fountains are out of order, leaving gym members dangerously thirsty. The basketball court is too small, with walls infringing on the out-of-bounds lines, making it impossible to shoot corner threes. There are numerous redundant workout machines but a lack of space for essential exercises like squats or bench press, which are always occupied. On the bright side, you can easily find the review link located conveniently above the malfunctioning water fountains!
Ruth Nguyen (6/14/25, 5:23 AM):
Weights strewn about, rubbish scattered everywhere. If you take pleasure in tidying up after others or engaging in a scavenger hunt during your workout, then this establishment may be just the ticket for you. Do the staff not care at all about maintaining the appearance of their gym?
Deborah Reyes (6/13/25, 10:03 PM):
The workers at this establishment are quite unprofessional, particularly the front desk staff who displays disrespect and a challenging attitude. They place excessive emphasis on guest pass privileges, seemingly with the sole intention of pressuring individuals into signing up for a membership. I would not suggest Downtown LA Fitness as a suitable option.
Brittany Evans (6/12/25, 10:44 PM):
They have a tendency to close off entire sections at unexpected moments, making it impossible to use the facilities you've already paid for.
Alice Morales (6/11/25, 7:29 PM):
This is me go-to gym for the cost and the facilities. I frequent this place, but I definitely need to up my game and go more often!
Victoria Myers (6/11/25, 4:04 PM):
The folks at the front desk are quite lovely, but I must say I was rather misinformed about the membership and freezing guidelines. In the end, I found myself having to pay more than what was initially presented to me upon sign-up. Moreover, this particular LA Fitness establishment is lacking in terms of equipment - there are a number of missing weight pins on various machines, rendering them unusable. The free weights section is also quite disorganized, with many weights left haphazardly strewn about without being properly returned. Cancelling a membership can be quite the hassle as well, as it involves printing out a form from the website and sending it via traditional mail. The one redeeming quality of this gym is its conveniently located spot in Silver Spring.
Randy Phillips (6/3/25, 4:40 PM):
TJ has been a massive help to me. I'll definitely be signing up for a membership soon.
Stephanie Patterson (5/31/25, 2:00 AM):
I've been attending this gym for nearly a year now, and week by week, the experience seems to be deteriorating. The cleanliness is progressively declining, machines are frequently out of order, and even the water fountains are not functioning properly. It's quite disappointing, as one would expect operational water fountains to be the most basic requirement of any gym. When I inquired about the repair timeline to the staff, they seemed clueless and unable to provide any concrete information.
Lisa Cook (5/28/25, 12:53 PM):
The lavatory floors constantly have a pungent odor of urine. I have refrained from utilizing the sauna due to its unpleasant smell as well; I highly doubt it receives regular cleaning. A number of the weightlifting apparatus require maintenance or replacement. I would only suggest visiting this establishment out of necessity. Despite the shortcomings, I still frequent this fitness center once or twice a week, limited options in the vicinity.
Matthew Kim (5/26/25, 7:25 PM):
Definitely recommend checking out this place! TJ is top-notch, will be bringing the lads along next time for sure!
Angela Hamilton (5/25/25, 9:13 AM):
The staff at this gym is really cool. TJ is an outstanding employee.
Mia Ford (5/25/25, 2:06 AM):
I reckon it's worth keeping an eye on the swimming pool 🏊‍♀️, as it can get a bit grubby at times. And don't get me started on the prices at the vending machine - a total rip-off! Five bucks for a measly bottle of Powerade? No way am I shelling out that much cash.
Bobby Stewart (5/20/25, 1:30 PM):
I popped in for a tour and was instantly welcomed. Cai gave me the grand tour, and let me tell you, it was top-notch! Felt like a proper VIP experience, I must say. Marcus was also a gem - friendly and welcoming vibes all around. Not a bit intimidating, highly recommended. I officially became a member today, and can’t wait to get started!
Frank Henderson (5/19/25, 3:23 AM):
It's about time for this gym to shut down. The folks in charge clearly can't be bothered to keep things tidy around here. The locker rooms and bathrooms are absolutely vile - dirty and repulsive. And let's not even talk about the stench coming from the showers. It's like a sewer in there!
Isabella Kim (5/18/25, 10:05 PM):
Let's just say Edgar is not cutting it as a manager. The guy might be playing the part, but he's absolutely rubbish at his job. Come on LA, step it up! And don't get me started on the cleanliness - that place is an absolute mess. Do yourself a favor and pack some hand sanitizer before you go in. Cheers!
Brandon Johnson (5/18/25, 6:57 PM):
The Gym was really well laid out and the staff were super friendly. In particular, Cai was really sociable and ready to assist. Excellent customer service overall, I'll definitely be returning.
Doris Stewart (5/18/25, 3:02 PM):
Inefficient staff when the manager is off-site. The equipment and facilities are frequently out of order. The restroom sinks are inoperable 99% of the time, with only a couple working. The toilets are often clogged and undergoing maintenance.
Deborah Reed (5/17/25, 3:27 PM):
Wonderful spot, fantastic team! Plus, they've got a dojo for martial arts training!
Brandon Watson (5/16/25, 4:41 AM):
Fantastic gym! The team is top-notch, big shoutout to TJ and Jase!
