Planet Fitness Silver Spring: A Comprehensive Review
Located in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland, Planet Fitness offers a unique gym experience catering to various fitness enthusiasts. However, like any establishment, it has its pros and cons that potential members should consider.
Membership Required
To access the facilities at Planet Fitness, a membership is required. With affordable monthly plans starting around $10, it attracts a diverse crowd looking for a budget-friendly workout option. However, the experience can vary widely based on the time of day and member behavior.
Atmosphere
Despite promoting a "Judgment Free Zone," many reviews indicate that the atmosphere can sometimes feel unwelcoming. Reports of inappropriate behavior and noise level issues have been noted, particularly during peak hours when younger patrons dominate machines while glued to their phones. Moreover, concerns about cleanliness can detract from the overall ambiance.
Amenities
Planet Fitness provides a range of amenities including cardio machines, weightlifting equipment, and locker rooms with showers. However, reviews frequently mention maintenance issues such as broken urinals, dirty bathrooms, and neglected showers. The lack of attention to cleanliness, particularly in locker rooms and restrooms, has led many members to express their dissatisfaction.
Wi-Fi Access
The gym also offers free Wi-Fi, which is convenient for those who like to listen to music or track workouts online. This feature can enhance the workout experience, provided the environment is conducive to exercising.
Wheelchair-Accessible Facilities
One notable aspect is the wheelchair-accessible entrance, making the facility inclusive for all members. Yet, some have highlighted problems such as broken elevators, hindering access to certain areas of the gym.
Planning Your Visit
When planning to visit, it's essential to consider peak hours, typically between 5 PM and 8 PM, when the gym can become overcrowded. Members have reported long waits for machines and equipment during these times. For a more pleasant experience, visiting during off-peak hours is advisable.
Customer Service and Staff Interaction
While some staff members receive praise for their friendly demeanor and helpfulness, others have been criticized for their lack of customer service skills. It’s important to note that a positive interaction with staff can greatly enhance your gym experience.
Conclusion
In summary, while Planet Fitness in Silver Spring offers an affordable membership with basic gym amenities, prospective members should weigh the potential drawbacks. Cleanliness remains a significant concern, and the atmosphere may not be suitable for everyone. Consider visiting during less crowded times to get the most out of your workout and to gauge whether this gym aligns with your fitness goals.

The vast majority of the staff at this establishment provide top-notch service. However, there has been an ongoing issue with one particular employee who has shown hostility towards me. Feeling that the situation was becoming untenable, I decided to escalate the matter to the manager. I left multiple messages at the front desk, which were confirmed as received. I also tried calling the office number provided by the staff and left messages requesting the manager's attention. I even went as far as sending an email. Despite more than a month passing, it seems that the manager has not deemed it necessary to respond to any of my numerous attempts to reach out. This lack of response only serves to highlight the manager's apparent disregard for the patrons of the facility.

"It was quite the experience, I must say. This gym is far superior to the one in Rockville. The only issue I had was that it appears there's always a broken Hydro Chair in every PF location I visit, quite amusing really. Apart from that, it was a splendid experience. The facilities were clean and invigorating."
Beverly Ford (6/4/25, 5:21 PM):
Lovely large gym with top-notch equipment. I recently became a member and plan to stick around!
Update: April 2021. It appears they prioritize enforcing mask-wearing over cleaning the gym thoroughly.
Quite bustling during the day, and they often have folks waiting outside when capacity is reached. Not the most convenient setup!
Nicole Myers (6/1/25, 7:19 AM):
My hubby and I, we both hit up this gym, you know? The gal at the front desk, Margaret Francis, is an absolute doll. Always so friendly, top-notch customer service. The loo is always spotless and the gear they've got is top of the line. We're in there three, four times a week, no doubt. Big love for this gym and the crew!
Mary Ortiz (6/1/25, 12:37 AM):
I must say, I shelled out $199 for a whole year’s worth of membership at this place. With 24/7 access, it’s an absolute steal, I tell you. Sure, the place can get a tad grimy at times (the men’s locker room is known to get a bit whiffy occasionally), but you can’t argue with that price point. And let me tell you, they definitely don’t hold back on the gear. Treadmills galore, I say!
Maria Thompson (5/30/25, 6:16 PM):
I absolutely adore this gym! The classes are such a blast and challenging while being suitable for all levels of fitness. The team is incredibly warm and humorous. I've been a member since January. Troy Garcia is an absolute gem of a trainer and he takes charge of the workouts. Thanks to his amazing classes and training expertise, I've managed to shed 45lbs since January. I have no intentions of ever parting ways with this gym.
Catherine Brooks (5/30/25, 10:05 AM):
I absolutely adore the skilled and energetic staff at this gym. They ensure that the gym is spotless, the equipment is in top-notch condition, and they create a safe space for us ladies. The music is always lively, and the atmosphere genuinely inspires me to push through my workouts. I've been a loyal member for 3-4 years now, and it truly feels like my second home.
Jean Reynolds (5/30/25, 4:46 AM):
Planet Fitness is a cracking gym for beginners and intermediates. The price of 10 quid a month can't be beat, and I love that it's open 24 hours a day. Due to my busy schedule, I pop in around 3AM most days. I'm a fan of the culture that encourages folks to clean off the equipment after use and put the weights back where they belong. Most people follow these rules, which makes the atmosphere quite pleasant. Of course, there are always a few selfish blokes who chuck their cleaning towels on the floor rather than in the bin and hog certain equipment without giving others a chance, but thankfully they're in the minority at my gym.
I appreciate the non-judgmental vibe that makes us less experienced gym-goers feel comfortable showing our weaknesses so we can work on making them strengths. The staff have been top-notch, always friendly and helpful. The only drawback is that the equipment mainly consists of machines, which keeps things safe and costs low but does limit the variety of exercises you can do.
Alice Edwards (5/27/25, 10:06 PM):
Pros: Reasonably priced, the majority of the equipment is in good condition, and there are plenty of cardio machines available.
Cons: Lack of maintenance in non-equipment areas (the water bottle filling station has been out of order for weeks, locker room doors are falling apart), consistently warm temperature, bank details required to create an account.
Overall, it's a satisfactory gym for the average individual. It can get quite busy during peak hours, as expected given the location. It's a bit frustrating to see the lack of upkeep in what is otherwise a relatively new facility. The quality of the trainers at the gym is not impressive, so I would recommend skipping the classes. While casual gym-goers may find it suitable, serious fitness enthusiasts might want to explore other options.
Kevin Simmons (5/27/25, 8:19 AM):
Expansive array of exercise equipment of all kinds. Double-level facility that is impeccably clean. Impressive spa area featuring massage chairs, hydro massage beds, lounge chairs, total body enhancement chambers, and tanning beds. Spacious male and female locker rooms, bathrooms, and shower stalls. Conveniently situated near a metro station with ample parking. Top-notch staff!
Sarah Graham (5/24/25, 9:01 AM):
I enjoy going to the gym, but it can be frustrating when other patrons are hogging the machines while glued to their phones. It would be beneficial for the gym to have an older individual monitoring the floor to ensure proper etiquette. I have witnessed guests leaving energy drink cans on equipment and weights scattered in the walkways, making it difficult to navigate. Some individuals seem to treat the gym like their own personal space, showing up shirtless in flip-flops, which is clearly against the rules. It's disappointing that there doesn't seem to be anyone enforcing these guidelines.
Noah Myers (5/24/25, 12:20 AM):
The gym is absolutely brilliant. The location couldn't be better. The staff are so friendly and they have an abundance of top-notch machines.
Mark Butler (5/22/25, 4:21 PM):
This gym is top-notch, mate! Everything's in mint condition, the staff is dead friendly, and the price is spot on. Plus, they let you bring a guest along, perfect if you're smashing out a workout with your other half. The equipment is solid, but they could do with adding a stretch zone, in my opinion. Cheers!
Sarah Coleman (5/22/25, 12:17 AM):
This establishment in Silver Spring is truly top-notch...immaculate, spacious, and staffed with exceptionally well-trained and friendly employees. I was thoroughly impressed, as I was with the Rockville, MD location also...but the Silver Spring Planet Fitness takes it up a notch...although, there is a slight parking concern, it is definitely worth a visit!
Shirley Fisher (5/18/25, 7:16 PM):
Absolutely dreadful workers, I must say. Instead of tending to the upkeep and cleanliness of the establishment, they seem to be glued to their mobile devices, scarcely bothering to acknowledge your presence. The equipment is consistently filthy and the restroom is abysmal. The water pressure is so abominable that it requires three attempts just to fill a simple water bottle. Truly deplorable service all around.
Eric Murphy (5/17/25, 11:55 AM):
If they provided a sauna or a pool, and mixed up the music selection instead of just country tunes all the time like the facility in downtown Silver Spring, I'd definitely rate them 5 stars. I really appreciate the fact that they provide tanning services - that's a major bonus for me.
Roger Thompson (5/16/25, 5:46 AM):
Your location is fantastic and right in the heart of downtown. The staff is friendly and helpful. The overall ambiance at the gym is really pleasant, but the music they play through the speakers can be quite loud and occasionally disruptive. The variety of TV channels available is great. The cleanliness standards are generally good, although the bathrooms could use more attention at times. The gym equipment is of good quality, but there are a few machines that are not functioning properly and make strange noises. Some customers tend to be quite loud and run on the treadmills at high speeds, which can be disturbing to others.
Frank Patterson (5/16/25, 2:07 AM):
I must say, what really tickled my fancy were the hours and the sheer plethora of equipment and stations available at this fine establishment. With the exception of a few specialized machines like the assisted pull-up contraption or the leg raise stand, there were always a minimum of two of each machine or station. There might have been a tad more competition during peak hours to snag a spot, but lucky for us, the gym operates around the clock, so there's always a chance to swing by at a different hour, if one's schedule allows it. Cheers to flexible fitness routines!
Michael Adams (5/14/25, 6:20 PM):
Make sure to always keep an eye on your belongings; I had a situation where my lock on the locker room was tampered with and my wallet and things were taken. I saw a manager using wire cutters to remove someone's lock in front of me, which was concerning. He simply asked "what's in the locker?" which seemed suspicious to me, as any thief could have observed their target placing valuable items inside. I recommend that the gym trains its managers to request members to verify their identity by showing their wallet ID, as there are no security cameras in the locker rooms. Besides this issue, the staff at PF is great!
Kimberly Howard (5/11/25, 1:47 PM):
This gym is top-notch, mate! The folks here are proper tidy, always wiping down the gear after a workout. Everyone's friendly and respectful of machine use times. My only gripe would be that the locker room could do with a bit more attention when it comes to cleaning. Cheers!
